Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
