Donald Trump's Framework of Retribution and Reward

The ex-president's insatiable desire for retribution has quickly morphed into a structured system. Over the past year, the leader's fury and impulses have adopted the guise of official policies in a manner analogous to earlier authoritarian systems. Government officials who do not cooperate are immediately dismissed and replaced by devotees. Opposing officials who question him encounter indictment, court proceedings and punishment. Adversaries have been labeled under administration memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “opposed to religious values” and “anti-capitalist”, and warned with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

Every instance involving targeting of political opponents and protection for loyalists exhibits its own unique characteristics. But, regardless of their individual form, they represent expressions of what has developed as a systematic approach. Such events are anything but coincidental. The administration's purge of federal attorneys and law enforcement officials, accompanied by his placement of devotees in senior posts, started swiftly, soon took on a consistency, and has now been molded into a system. The justice department and the FBI have been remade into partisan agencies under his direct orders to implement his directives. Injustice has been rendered normal. It constitutes the retribution system.

Administration is more concerned with penalizing the President's perceived opponents than they are with protecting our national security.

Within the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been uncovered in the court filing of multiple ex- top FBI executives submitted in September in the judicial system in DC against FBI director an administration figure and attorney general another official for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of revenge against Plaintiffs for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to demonstrate sufficient political loyalty”. The document states that one official, the ex- temporary head, details a discussion in which he “openly admitted the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

Driscoll had sought to defend FBI agents from being dismissed, the complaint claims. Patel advised him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the executive branch and justice department – had instructed him to fire everyone who they determined as having participated in a legal probe against him. The document adds: “Patel clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his superiors told him to dismiss, because his capacity to hold his own role depended on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the President. The director explained that there was no way he or the official could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency tried to incarcerate the leader in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” When the official advised the director he was violating the bureau's own internal rules, Patel reportedly said “he knew that and he was aware the nature of the immediate dismissals were likely unlawful”.

Widespread Impact

After his reported confession to Driscoll, the justice department and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for the administration's revenge apparatus. Several of the FBI's senior executives were terminated or pushed out in the initial period of the administration. Roughly 4,500 legal professionals at the department have taken a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of several federal prosecutors, such as those in the New York office, quit in protest over what they viewed as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the New York City mayor, a political figure, in return for his cooperation with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of immigrants. The ethics division of DoJ, which oversees ethical violations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The equality section has been devastated: seventy percent of its personnel has departed. A third of senior leaders at DoJ have left. The unit implementing environmental law has experienced the exit of a majority its management.

Incentives and Sanctions

Concerning the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the southern district of New York, she, resigned in objection against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, Trump's “enforcement chief,” appeared as the enforcer with Adams on television to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Additionally, a former official, earlier the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the agreement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

The president's immunity for offenses carried out while in power, provided by the unprecedented decision of the conservative on the judicial body, thus thwarting his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his political viability for the presidential race, is the basis on which he relies to defend his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been empowered to permit corruption. The consequence of the judicial ruling infuses his presidency and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has spread. In the words of a past leader's legal adviser he commented about the Watergate
