European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
