The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
