The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
