The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
